Vasile Alecsandri Theater from Balti to stage play dedicated to memory of Stalinist deportations on Great National Assembly Square

The Great National Assembly Square (PMAN) will host the play, Homework, an emotional drama inspired by the Stalinist deportations, on July 25, starting from 20:00, staged by the actors of the National Theater 'Vasile Alecsandri' from Balti. Admission to the event is free for all attendees.

The play is based on the homonymous novel written by the late academic Nicolae Dabija and depicts the love story between Mihai, a Romanian literature teacher, and his former student, Maria. The action takes place mostly in the Gulag, where the two lovers face together the torture, famine and dreadful sufferings of political detention.

The performance is part of the traveling exhibition of the railway carriages, State Terror in Soviet Moldova. Scope, Victims, and Perpetrators, organized by the State Chancellery and the Ministry of Culture, with the support of the Interior Ministry, the National Archives Agency, the Railway of Moldova, and the Government Buildings Administration Directorate.

The event is meant to commemorate the largest wave of deportations in the history of Bessarabia, which took place between July 6 and 9, 1949, when over 11,000 families – a total of 35,796 people, including 11,889 children – were forcibly relocated to Siberia under inhumane conditions.
