VIDEO // Moldovan government transfers land needed to continue work on bridge across Prut river at Ungheni, connecting Moldova and Romania
The government today ruled to transfer, free of charge, a plot of land in the village of Zagarancea, central Ungheni district, necessary for the construction and completion of the Union Bridge (Ungheni) and the national road R1 Chisinau – Ungheni – Romania.
The land will be transferred from the administration of the Environment Ministry, currently managed by the Agency Moldsilva, State Enterprise, Silva-Centru, Ungheni, to the administration of the Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry (MIDR), under the management of the State Roads’ Administration.
"Today, at the government, we voted an important decision that will allow us to continue the construction of the Union Bridge at Ungheni. Thus, we transferred a necessary section of land from the forest fund, so that the first motorway bridge connecting Moldova and Romania can be continued and completed. Moldova needs major projects and they can only be achieved through cooperation," said Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder.
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea said that this land section would allow the construction of the first bridge across the Prut River in the last 60 years, a bridge that will connect Moldova with Romania and interconnect the first motorway to be built, the A1 of Moldova, with the A8 motorway in Romania.
"The way we collaborate shows how things should be done at both local and central levels," noted Vladimir Bolea.
The decision is important for continuing the procedures necessary for the construction, rehabilitation, modernization and expansion of this road section, which is of strategic importance for connecting Moldova with the Romanian border.
At the same time, this measure will help improve road infrastructure, facilitate traffic and create better conditions for citizens and for freight transport.
The Ungheni Golaiesti (RO) – Zagarancea (MD) bridge is not just a simple structure for crossing the Prut River, but a strategic element in the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). It will connect Romania and Moldova via the motorway that will cross the Carpathians (the A8 Union Motorway) and a motorway towards Chisinau, facilitating the transport of goods and people between the two countries and with the rest of Europe.
The implementation of this ambitious project is made possible by non-reimbursable European funding of approximately 35 million euros, through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). This funding underlines the strategic importance of the project for the European Union and its commitment to developing transport infrastructure in the region.
The Flower Bridge at Ungheni is more than an infrastructure project; it is a symbol of the close cooperation between Romania and Moldova and of their shared commitment to a European future. The completion of this project will bring significant benefits to both countries, facilitating trade, tourism and cultural exchanges and contributing to better regional integration.
