Mărculești Airport has potential to become regional logistics hub for cargo transportation - Deputy Prime Minister says
The leadership of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) evaluated the activity of Mărculești International Airport yesterday. Officials assessed the current state of the airport infrastructure and discussed the necessary investments for the modernization of the airport, establishing the next steps towards commencing rehabilitation works.
Representatives of airline companies and tourism industry also participated in the discussions, which aimed at launching future commercial flights and opportunities to attract investments in developing the strategic point.
“Mărculești Airport has the potential to become a regional logistics hub for cargo transport. Its transformation into a modern airport is a strategic objective that will support the economic development of the northern region and contribute to increasing the competitiveness of the aviation sector in the Republic of Moldova. We aim to bring safe and efficient transport services closer to people, creating new opportunities for local development,” Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea said.
The modernization project involves the rehabilitation of the runway, upgrading the lighting system and renovating the terminal, investments that will allow for the operation of commercial passenger and cargo flights.
The modernization of Mărculești International Airport is part of the Mobility Strategy 2030, an extensive government plan for developing a modern, integrated and sustainable transportation infrastructure at national level.
