Moldova has nearly 243 MWh of energy storage capacity

Installed energy storage capacity in the Republic of Moldova reached 242.85 MWh in late August 2026, while investor interest in new projects is growing.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the data were presented by State Secretary Carolina Novac at the Energy Storage Europe 2026 conference held in Brussels. The official spoke about the Republic of Moldova’s experience in developing and connecting storage systems to the electricity grid.

One indicator of investor interest is the tender organized in 2026 for wind projects with storage systems. A total of 16 bids were submitted, representing approximately 424 MW of wind power capacity and 305 MWh of storage capacity.

The bids significantly exceed the requirement established through the tender, which provided for the installation of 170 MW of wind power capacity and 44 MWh of storage capacity.

“Investor interest is evident. Our task now is to ensure that procedures keep pace with it,” said Carolina Novac.

According to the official, the regulatory framework for storage systems has been simplified. The measures adopted include eliminating certain administrative requirements for battery installation, including the urban planning certificate for design and the construction permit. Tax and customs incentives for batteries have also been introduced, while the new connection rules allow more flexible solutions in areas where the grids are congested.

Developing storage capacity is also important for balancing the power system as renewable energy production increases. According to data from Moldelectrica state-owned enterprise, the estimated need is approximately 246 MW of balancing capacity.

The tender organized in May 2026 brought new suppliers and technologies to the market, including battery systems, gas-fired generation, and renewable energy sources.

“Deregulation, faster permitting, digital transformation, and safe operation must advance together. Clear and predictable procedures can help storage projects be integrated sooner,” Carolina Novac added.

In late August 2026, more than 1,100 MW of renewable energy generation capacity had been installed in the Republic of Moldova. Approximately two-thirds of this capacity is photovoltaic, increasing the need for storage solutions to integrate renewable energy and ensure the flexible and secure operation of the power system.
