Moldova set to increase renewable energy's share, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030
Moldova has committed to achieve the national goal of having a 30-per cent share of renewable energy in the final energy consumption by 2030. At the same time, a 68.5-per cent cut in greenhouse gas emissions is scheduled. These goals have been included in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan 2025-2030 (PNIEC), unveiled Chisinau today.
The plan establishes Moldova's de-carbonization goals, sets targets for renewable energy, energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and supports the country's commitments under the Energy Community Treaty.
PNIEC includes concrete measures to ensure energy security, such as diversifying energy import sources and strengthening the national energy system's connectivity through new lines to Romania and ENTSO-E. Actions are also planned for the renovation of residential buildings with financial support from the Energy Efficiency Fund in the Residential Sector and promoting non-polluting transport.
As for the domestic energy market, the plan provides for the modernization and liberalization of the market, the creation of intraday and next-day markets, as well as its interconnection with European markets. Additionally, the Moldovan Energy Market Operator will be launched and cross-border markets for balancing energy systems will be established.
Attending the event Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu said that the implementation of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan would support economic development and bring Moldova closer to European Union standards, stimulating innovations and contributing to a fair transition that will also create new jobs.
Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu noted that PNIEC included 95 measures, the implementation of which will strengthen the country's energy security, modernize the energy market and promote renewable energy sources. The actions will also improve energy efficiency, support research and innovation in the field and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
United Nations Development Programme’s (UNDP) Resident Representative in Moldova Daniela Gasparikova said that the plan was proof of Moldova's commitment to a sustainable and resilient future. The official also said that the document sets ambitious yet realistic objectives that can be implemented through a joint effort.
PNIEC 2025-2030 was developed with the support of the European Union through the programme, Addressing the Impact of the Energy Crisis in Moldova, implemented by UNDP Moldova and with the support of United States Agency for International Development (USAID), through the Moldova Energy Security Activity (MESA) Project.
