More energy from renewable sources

Two large photovoltaic power plants will be built in the Republic of Moldova by late 2025. They will be located in Negureni, Telenești district, and Rădeni, Strășeni district. The new plants will increase the total installed capacity of renewable energy sources by 90 MW.

The photovoltaic plant in Negureni will have an installed capacity of 40 MW, while the one in Rădeni will have 50 MW. Both are scheduled to be operational by December.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the two plants will generate over 100 million kWh annually, which will help cover a significant part of the energy needs on the right bank of the Dniester River. After the commissioning of the photovoltaic plants, the total installed capacity of renewable energy sources will increase to a total of 670 MW, compared to 580 MW at the end of 2024.

The draft decisions for authorizing the construction of the two plants have been proposed to the Government for approval. According to the Electricity Law, the construction of plants in the open market with a capacity greater than 20 MW requires Government approval.

According to data of the National Center for Sustainable Energy, by the end of 2024, the installed capacities of renewable power plants, including solar, wind, hydro and biogas energy have reached a figure of nearly 580 MW, marking a threefold increase compared to 2022 and an eightfold increase compared to 2020.

Statistics show that last year, 691 thousand MW of electricity was generated from renewable sources, accounting for 16.72% of the annual consumption of the Republic of Moldova, excluding the eastern districts. The target set by the authorities is to increase the share of renewable energy to 30% of electricity consumption.
