Number of electric cars registered in Moldova constantly increase in recent years
Moldova has made significant progress in the development of electric and hybrid transport in the last years. Starting from 2018 till last March, over 64,000 electric and hybrid transport means have been registered in the country, according to data processed by the National Centre for Sustainable Energy (NCSE).
More specifically, on the concerned period, 6,612 electric vehicles and 57,879 hybrid vehicles (including plug-in hybrid) were registered in Moldova.
The preference of Moldovans for electric cars was also obvious in the first quarter of this year, when 828 electric vehicles were registered, up by a 266 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024.
At the same time, the number of hybrid cars registered in the first three months of 2025 was 6,396, up by 281 per cent compared to the January - March 2024 period.
The NCSE noted that the upward trend noticed this year shows a promising direction for the future of sustainable mobility in Moldova, contributing to the cutting of carbon emissions and improving the quality of life for all traffic participants.
The increase in the number of electric cars is seen by specialists as a solution for utilizing the excess energy from renewable sources, achieved on some days with abundant sun and wind. For instance, on April 14, the share of renewable energy reached a new record of 36%, with an excess of green energy recorded during midday hours. Officials from the Ministry of Energy say that this surplus can be used for charging electric cars, thus harnessing green energy and promoting a cleaner environment.
