Republic of Moldova and EU open accession negotiations today for Cluster 6
The third Intergovernmental Conference between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union is taking place today, 14 July, in Brussels. During the meeting, negotiations for Cluster 6 – External Relations – will be officially opened, marking a new step in the process of the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union.
The delegation of the Republic of Moldova is headed by Acting Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu. During the conference, the Council of the European Union will present the common position of the member states regarding Cluster 6, while the Moldovan side will set out its negotiating position and the commitments undertaken to align with European legislation and policies.
The meeting will begin at 18:00 (Republic of Moldova time). At the end of the Intergovernmental Conference, starting at 19:00, a joint press conference will be held by the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, the Irish Minister for European Affairs and Defence, Thomas Byrne, and the Acting Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Eugeniu Osmochescu.
Cluster 6 includes two negotiating chapters – Chapter 30 External Relations and Chapter 31 Common Foreign, Security and Defence Policy. These areas concern the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the EU’s common commercial policy, as well as its gradual alignment with the European Union’s foreign and security policy.
According to the authorities in Chișinău, the opening of negotiations for this cluster will help create greater opportunities for Moldovan exporters, attract investment, and strengthen cooperation in the field of security. The Republic of Moldova also aims to participate more actively in European mechanisms to combat hybrid threats and to strengthen resilience.
