EU grants Moldova additional 120 million euros to strengthen defense

The European Union will provide the Republic of Moldova with a new assistance package worth 120 million euros through the European Peace Facility (EPF), aimed at strengthening the country’s defense capabilities. With this new measure, the total support offered to the Republic of Moldova through the EPF reaches 317 million euros from 2021 to the present.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union regarding the approval of the new assistance package, noting that it will contribute to the modernization of the air defense capabilities of the National Army.

According to the MFA, European support will help strengthen the security of the airspace of the Republic of Moldova and, implicitly, increase the safety of citizens.

“The respective assistance is expected to make a significant medium-term contribution to the modernization of the air defense capabilities of the National Army,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The institution noted that the equipment delivered through the European Peace Facility has also been used in actions with a direct impact on the population, including for the defusing of shells remaining from the World War II, providing drinking water to localities affected by the pollution of the Dniester River, and mitigating the consequences of the floods that occurred in the Republic of Moldova in the spring of 2026.

The Republic of Moldova is the second-largest beneficiary of assistance granted by the European Union through the European Peace Facility, after Ukraine. With the newly approved package, the total support offered to the Republic of Moldova through the EPF amounts to 317 million euros for the period 2021–2026.
