The benefits of the local public administration reform for communities of Moldova and the areas of cooperation between the country and the Council of Europe have been discussed in Strasbourg by the Secretary General of the Government Alexei Buzu and the new President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, Gunn Marit Helgesen.

The officials referred to the importance of strengthening local public administration by creating stronger town halls, higher-quality public services and communities that are better prepared to meet citizens’ needs.

The topic of reform was also addressed in discussions with Daniel Popescu, Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Regions. The sides examined the support opportunities which the Council of Europe can provide to Moldova in this process.

During the visit, the government’s secretary general also spoke with Marja Ruotanen, Director General for Democracy and Human Dignity of the Council of Europe. The discussions focused on cooperation in areas important for citizens, such as preventing and combating domestic violence, protecting children and countering disinformation.

Also in Strasbourg, the Secretary General of the Government visited an exhibition dedicated to the traditional Moldovan folk costume. The event is part of the cultural programme of the Moldovan Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

“It is a source of pride to know that our values and traditions are known and appreciated beyond the country’s borders, and that our heritage contributes to the cultural diversity that defines Europe. We have a responsibility to preserve it, promote it, and pass it on to future generations,” the head of the State Chancellery noted.
