“A Night Written in Red” - documentary performance about courage, resistance and freedom staged in Parliament square

Chisinau, September 26, 2026 – Numerous people gathered on Friday evening in Parliament Square to watch the documentary performance “A Night Written in Red,” directed by Luminița Țâcu and featuring actors from “Teatrul Fără Nume.” The performance brought back to the public’s attention the lives marked by the Soviet totalitarian regime and the persecution directed against those who had the courage to express their convictions freely.

The documentary tells the story of two young women, Lilia Neagu and Asea Andruh, who, on the night of October 1, 1970, put up more than 40 slogans throughout Soviet Chisinau. The stories of the two protagonists speak of the courage to think freely, resistance and the price of freedom at a time when the collapse of the Soviet Union seemed unimaginable.

Present at the performance, alongside the protagonists, were Speaker Igor Grosu, Minister of Culture Dan Suruceanu, MPs, people from the cultural and artistic community, teachers, young people and members of the general public.



“So much modesty and strength in their example, which is a lesson for all of us. It is essential to know our past and build our future in freedom and democracy. We have transformed Parliament Square, which was somewhat dull, into a space for beauty, theatre and concerts,” said Grosu.

“Through the artists’ impeccable performances, we had the opportunity to trace the threads of history and see a sad yet instructive page that teaches us to be true citizens,” emphasized Minister of Culture Dan Suruceanu.

In recognition and appreciation of its substantial contribution to preserving and promoting the culture of historical memory, fostering civic awareness and promoting democratic values, dignity and freedom, as well as passing on the historical truth and spiritual heritage of the Republic of Moldova to future generations, “Teatrul Fără Nume” was awarded the First-Class Diploma of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.

The event concluded the series of activities organized by Parliament throughout September to mark the International Day of Democracy. At the same time, it was part of the ten-day period dedicated to commemorating tragic moments in the country’s history: 85 years since the first wave of Stalinist deportations and 80 years since the outbreak of the orchestrated famine.

By organizing this performance, Parliament contributes to preserving historical memory and promoting democratic values, freedom and human dignity. Knowing the past is essential for understanding the value of freedom and building a society in which fundamental rights and freedoms are respected.

The event was organized by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in partnership with the Ministry of Culture and “Teatrul Fără Nume” of “Ginta Latină” Culture and Art Center. Free entry.
