Prime Minister holds talks with World Bank Group representatives

The development priorities of the Republic of Moldova, investments in infrastructure, and the continuation of reforms initiated with the support of the World Bank were discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, World Bank Country Director for Moldova and Ukraine Robert Saum, and Ines Rocha, Director for Europe at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group.

Tofan praised the partnership with the World Bank and the expertise provided to the Republic of Moldova in implementing reforms and development projects. The Prime Minister emphasized that the Government's priority is to accelerate economic development and use available resources as efficiently as possible for projects with a tangible impact.

An important topic of the discussions concerned the development of irrigation infrastructure. The Government is preparing a coordinated nationwide approach to expanding irrigation systems and increasing water storage capacity, as periods of drought become increasingly frequent. The objective is to use water collected during periods of abundant rainfall to support agriculture during dry periods.

The parties also discussed financing development projects and the need for sustainable, long-term financing instruments. In this context, the Prime Minister expressed the Government's interest in making broader use of the opportunities offered by international financial institutions.

Particular attention was paid to the complex reforms on the Government's agenda. The World Bank expressed its readiness to provide expertise and technical assistance in areas such as the pension system, fiscal policy, public-sector wages, railway infrastructure, and the development of the public and private sectors.

Tofan emphasized that maintaining the Republic of Moldova's economic and energy stability is essential both for the country's development and for regional resilience amid the war in Ukraine.
