Moldova, Canada to strengthen cooperation in security and trade

The Republic of Moldova and Canada will strengthen cooperation in the areas of security and trade. The subject was discussed in Toronto by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi and Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two officials reviewed the priorities of bilateral cooperation for the upcoming period and discussed expanding Moldovan-Canadian relations, including in the areas of security and trade.

Mihai Popșoi thanked Canada for the financial and technical assistance provided to the Republic of Moldova over the years, as well as for its support for the country's European path.


“We have a clear objective: to bring the Republic of Moldova into the great European family. We have made important progress and continue to work on implementing the reforms necessary for EU accession. At the same time, attracting investment and increasing Moldovan exports are priorities for the development of the national economy,” Mihai Popșoi said.


Another topic addressed was the implementation of the Social Security Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Canada, signed on March 13, 2026. Once it enters into force, the agreement will allow insurance periods completed in the two countries to be combined when pension entitlements are established.

For her part, Anita Anand said that her country would provide the Republic of Moldova with all necessary support, including in priority areas. The Canadian minister also confirmed her willingness to maintain bilateral dialogue in order to identify solutions to help the Republic of Moldova manage the challenges of the cold season.

The officials also discussed the regional security situation in the context of Russia's war against Ukraine. Mihai Popșoi highlighted the main risks facing the Republic of Moldova, including repeated violations of national airspace by Russian drones.

In this context, the minister expressed interest in continuing cooperation between the two countries to strengthen national capacities to respond to hybrid and cyber threats, combat disinformation and foreign interference, and enhance defense capabilities.

Mihai Popșoi invited Anita Anand to pay a working visit to the Republic of Moldova.

In February 2027, 35 years will have passed since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and Canada.
