Number of people accommodated in tourist facilities in country increased by around 16 percent in first half of year

The number of people accommodated in tourist facilities in the Republic of Moldova increased by 15.8 percent in the first six months of the current year, reaching 257.3 thousand tourists, compared to the same period in 2025, when the figure was 222 thousand people.

The increase is visible across the main types of accommodation facilities. Hotels and motels registered 23.9% more tourists, while tourist and agritourism guesthouses saw a 10.9% rise.

Of the total number, 159.6 thousand foreign tourists stayed in tourist facilities in the Republic of Moldova, accounting for 62% of all guests. Most of them came from Ukraine and Romania, followed by the USA, Italy, Germany, Turkey, Israel, Poland, and the United Kingdom.

In the same period, tourists spent 679.9 thousand nights in accommodation units, 4.6% more than in the corresponding period of the previous year. At the same time, the number of available accommodation places increased by 1%, reaching 79 thousand, while their occupancy rate rose to 28.4%.

According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitization, these results show that the Republic of Moldova is becoming increasingly attractive to tourists, and the sector is consolidating its role in the development of both the local and national economy.

“We continue to support the development of a competitive, diversified, and attractive tourism industry, which creates opportunities for entrepreneurs and communities across the country,” the MEDD said.

Tourism is one of the sectors with significant development potential in the Republic of Moldova, being closely linked both to the national economy and to promoting the country’s image abroad. In recent years, the authorities have sought to capitalize on cultural, wine, and rural heritage as the main points of attraction for visitors.

In late May, the Government approved a project that provides for the transfer of the tourism sector to the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitization, as part of an institutional reorganization process aimed at integrating it into a broader framework of public policies focused on economic development, investment, competitiveness, and the promotion of the Republic of Moldova.

Among the priorities announced by the authorities in this context are increasing the number of tourists by at least 30% and implementing, by 2029, at least six capacity-building programs for small and medium-sized enterprises in the tourism sector.
