Moldova and International Renewable Energy Agency to cooperate to support growth of green energy sector
The development of the renewable energy sector in the Republic of Moldova, through cooperation with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was discussed at a meeting between Prime Minister Dorin Recean and Francesco La Camera, agency's director-general.
Recean said that over the past four years, the government has taken concrete steps to increase Moldova's energy security, and currently there are two goals in this area: increasing the share of renewable energy in national consumption and energy export.
“The renewable energy production capacity has increased eightfold, reaching almost 650 MW. Soon we will add another 165 MW, thanks to a recently concluded tender. This means that now, on days with favorable weather conditions, up to 30% of the energy consumed in Moldova comes from renewable sources, a target previously set for 2030. In 2020, only 3% of consumption came from green energy,” the prime minister said.
Recean said that the Republic of Moldova needs more visibility to attract investments in the renewable energy sector: “We need more competitiveness and attract more external participants to the launched procurements. This autumn we will launch a tender for the construction of wind farms accompanied by energy storage systems. This will allow us to make the grid more stable and efficient.”
IRENA's director general said that harnessing renewable sources and ensuring the interconnectivity of energy systems play an increasingly important role in guaranteeing energy security, especially in states affected by the geopolitical context. The officials also emphasized the need to enhance energy storage capacities, and the International Renewable Energy Agency expressed openness to support large projects of this kind.
