DOC Ion Munteanu appointed judge at Supreme Court of Justice

The position of General Prosecutor is vacant as of today, after the decree appointing Ion Munteanu as a judge of the Supreme Court of Justice was published in the Official Journal and came into effect.

Ion Munteanu was proposed for the mandate of judge at the Supreme Court of Justice by the Superior Council of Magistracy, after being declared the winner following a competition held for this purpose.

He was appointed as General Prosecutor of the Republic of Moldova on June 1, 2024. His candidacy was proposed to head of state Maia Sandu by the Superior Council of Prosecutors.

Munteanu has been a prosecutor since 2006 and previously worked in the Capital's Prosecutor's Office. In July 2010, he was appointed prosecutor in the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, and in 2019–2020 and 2021–2022, he was interim deputy chief prosecutor of this institution. Since October 12, 2022, Ion Munteanu has been appointed interim General Prosecutor, replacing Dumitru Robu.

According to current legislation, the Supreme Court of Justice has 20 judges, of which 11 are selected from among judges, and nine from lawyers, prosecutors or university professors in the law.
