Estonian Speaker: Moldova has shown remarkable resilience and determination on path of reforms and advancing towards European future
The Republic of Moldova has shown remarkable resilience and determination, following the path of democratic reforms and advancing towards its European future. Estonia will continue to support the path of our country and remains a committed partner, an ally and a reliable friend. The message was delivered today in the Parliament in Chisinau by President of the Riigikogu of the Republic of Estonia Lauri Hussar, who gave a speech at the opening sitting of the spring session of the parliament, alongside the speakers of the parliaments of Latvia and Lithuania, who are on a visit to Chisinau.
“It is a great honor to address the Legislature in Chisinau. I congratulate the Parliament for continuing the path of European integration following the elections in September. We understand the responsibility of continuing this visionary course,” the official stated.
According to the President of the Estonian Parliament, the path of reforms and European integration is not always easy and requires political courage, society’s trust, and long‑term commitment.
“It is a path that is nevertheless worth following. The path taken by Estonia and this journey shows that well‑designed reforms and a clear strategic direction can transform a country and improve the lives of its citizens. I want to reaffirm my country’s support for Moldova. You are not alone on this path; Estonia remains a committed partner, an ally, and a reliable friend,” the official emphasized.
Lauri Hussar noted that Estonia and Moldova have more than friendly relations and Moldova's future lies in the great European family, in a community built on common values.
“We share a deep common understanding of what it means to build and protect a democratic state, often in difficult circumstances. We know from our own history that democracy, sovereignty, and freedom are never guaranteed and cannot be taken for granted. Instead, we must defend and strengthen them every day. Every single day, without exception. Moldova has shown remarkable resilience and determination, following its path of democratic reforms and moving towards its European future. Estonia supports this path. We believe that the future of the Republic of Moldova lies in the great European family, in a community built on common values,” specified the President of the Riigikogu of the Republic of Estonia.
He gave the example of his own country, which has gone through the process of European integration, and said that Estonia is ready to share its experience in this regard.
“As a country that has undergone this transformation, Estonia understands the challenges of reforming institutions, strengthening governance, and reinforcing public trust. We are ready to share our experience as partners eager to support, to listen, and to cooperate,” Lauri Hussar said.
The Estonian Speaker stated that Russia’s war against Ukraine has had a huge impact on Moldova’s economy and energy sector and underlined the need to overcome these “temporary” difficulties for a “great cause.”
“We must be ready to face these temporary difficulties for a great cause. If we do not do this now, the consequences will be tragic. Russia never changes, and if we allow Russia to invade our minds with propaganda and to influence our peoples, we will suffer even more,” stressed Lauri Hussar.
According to him, Estonia supports the efforts of the Republic of Moldova to strengthen its resilience in the face of disinformation, cyber threats, and economic pressure.
“These challenges are not only present in Moldova; they concern all of us. Solidarity among democracies is not just a political option; it is a strategic necessity. The dark clouds of Russian hybrid aggression have not yet disappeared,” the official said.
At the same time, the President of the Estonian Parliament highlighted that in the current security environment, parliaments play a crucial role.
“They are the guardians of democratic legitimacy, of parliamentary oversight, and of accountability to the public. In these times marked by disinformation, foreign pressure, and external threats seeking to weaken countries from within, strong democratic institutions are more important than ever,” the official noted.
