European Commission President's message for Moldova, conveyed from Kogalniceanu base in Romania: "We will always stand by them"

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today arrived in Romania, where she was welcomed by President Nicusor Dan at the NATO military base in Mihail Kogalniceanu. In her press statements, the European official highlighted Romania's role in the European security and conveyed a strong message of support for Moldova.

“I would like to share some thoughts for our neighboring and friendly state, Moldova. We celebrated their Independence Day, Moldova's democracy, and their love for freedom. They have chosen the democratic, European path and we will always stand by them,” Ursula von der Leyen emphasized.

The head of the European Commission also highlighted Romania's support in countering disinformation campaigns, appreciating its direct contribution to strengthening regional resilience: “You have fought disinformation attempts, you are strong, and you have established support for Moldova (...), this only makes our resilience stronger.”

Von der Leyen also stressed Romania's strategic dimension in the European security architecture: “Romania is an advantage for European security. You help us keep Europe safe.” She said that 19 states had already joined the SAFE programme under the European rearmament initiative.

As for investments in defense, the President of the European Commission announced an ambitious proposal for the new EU budget: tripling funds for border security, five times more investments in the defense sector and ten times more for military mobility.

At the same time, Ursula von der Leyen praised Romania's modernization and reform efforts: “You have promoted reforms and are modernizing your economy, and we welcome these efforts. Romania has the things needed to set itself on the right path. Together, we strive to make the most of European funds to ensure a prosperous future for the Romanian people.”
