Women in Moldova received 15.6% less pay than men last year

Last year, women in the Republic of Moldova received salaries 15.6% lower than men. In monetary terms, a woman received 29,502 lei less than a man. The data was made public at the beginning of the plenary session by Deputy Speaker Doina Gherman, in the context of celebrating Equal Pay Day on February 27.

“For 2025, a woman needs to work until February 27 to earn a salary equal to that of a man, which means 39 extra days. In monetary terms, a woman received 29,502 lei less than a man, meaning women received 15.6% less than men in 2023. For every 1 leu a man receives, a woman receives 0.84 lei,” said Gherman.

The official also noted that retired women received 16.8% less monthly than male retirees, or almost 8,403 lei less annually.

“In 2022, we approved Law 107, which stipulates equal pay for equal work or work of equal value. We have adjusted the legislation to ensure greater salary transparency. Public hearings are announced on the Parliament platform for the second half of March. We expect representatives from the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitization, the Ministry of Finance, Employers, Trade Unions, and all interested parties with updated reports. The law is the law and must be applied. There is no argument for why, for the same work, a woman should be paid less than a man,” concluded Gherman.
