MEP: Russian Federation to try again to influence elections in Moldova
Romanian MEP Siegfried Mureșan warns that the Russian Federation will once again attempt to interfere in the electoral process in the Republic of Moldova, as it has done in the past at the presidential elections in Moldova and Romania.
“It is clear that Russia will try again to influence the democratic vote of the citizens. We will overcome again,” Mureșan stated in a message following an official visit to Chișinău.
This fall, parliamentary elections will take place in the Republic of Moldova, and the authorities in Chișinău need to be prepared to combat any form of external interference, the MEP emphasized.
“We need to stand by them, just as the people of the Republic of Moldova stood by Romania in the recent presidential elections,” he added.
During the official mission of the European Parliament, Mureșan met with representatives from the Strategic Communication and Disinformation Combat Center, the National Cyber Security Agency, the Intelligence and Security Service, civil society, and members of the European Union's civilian mission in Moldova.
“Romania and the European Union are safe and stable only if the Republic of Moldova is safe and stable. We must remain united in countering all external threats,” Siegfried Mureșan said.
On September 28, parliamentary elections will take place in the Republic of Moldova. Citizens will elect the composition of the next Parliament, consisting of 101 deputies elected through proportional vote on party lists.
The 2025 elections are considered crucial for the future European path of the Republic of Moldova, in the context of geopolitical tensions and the risks of external interference. Chișinău authorities have warned about possible attempts to influence the electoral process by the Russian Federation, similar to those reported in the 2024 presidential elections.
