Moldova advocates for accelerating EU accession negotiations

The Republic of Moldova is advocating for accelerating its accession process to the European Union and is calling for all six negotiation clusters to be opened by the end of 2026. The message was delivered by the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee for European Integration, Marcel Spatari, during the Meeting of the Chairpersons of the Conference of EU Affairs Committees (COSAC), held on 12–13 July in Dublin, Ireland.

In his address, Marcel Spatari emphasized the importance of maintaining the shared objective of concluding the Republic of Moldova’s EU accession negotiations by 2028. According to him, adhering to this timeline is essential for continuing reforms and strengthening the security of both the Republic of Moldova and the European Union.

The COSAC meeting included two discussion sessions. The first was dedicated to the priorities of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, focusing on three main areas: competitiveness, values, and security.

The second session focused on parliamentary cooperation and strengthening democratic resilience in the context of geopolitical challenges, technological developments, and pressure on democratic systems.

On the margins of the meeting, the Chair of the Committee for European Integration held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Belgium, France, and Germany. The discussions focused on the Republic of Moldova’s European path, parliamentary cooperation, and the support provided to our country in the EU accession process.

Ireland holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union from 1 July to 31 December 2026.

COSAC is a forum created in 1989 to facilitate cooperation, the exchange of information, and good practices between the national parliaments of the EU Member States and the European Parliament. COSAC Chairpersons’ meetings are held every six months.
