Parliamentary opposition boycotts consultations launched by Head of State on appointment of new Prime Minister

The opposition parliamentary factions are boycotting the consultations announced by the head of state, Maia Sandu, for the appointment of the new prime minister. Only the Democracy at Home faction came to the Presidency, spoke to the press, but did not enter the consultations.

Democracy at Home Party leader Vasile Costiuc said he would not take part in the consultations with Maia Sandu and reiterated that he is proposing Igor Grosu for the position of prime minister.

“I came to the Presidency, as a sign of protest, with a small pie, because the appetite of those who are sharing the pie has grown extremely,” Vasile Costiuc said.

Our Party faction, which was expected at the consultations at 11:00, also announced that it would not participate.

“Our position is clear: the Republic of Moldova no longer needs a PAS 4.0 Government. The country needs either a government of professionals or early parliamentary elections,” Our Party leader Renato Usatîi said.

The Alternative faction announced it would not participate in the consultations. MAN leader Ion Ceban declared that these consultations are merely simulated, describing them as “a show for the public and international partners.”

Earlier, the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova announced it would boycott the consultations.

“I do not see any candidate who can be prime minister, we are not going to participate,” said MP Vladimir Voronin.

The Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova also announced it would not take part in the consultations.

“The opposition will not participate in these consultations, because we understand that these consultations are being staged,” Deputy Speaker Vlad Batrîncea said.

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu has invited the parliamentary factions to consultations regarding the nomination of a candidate for the position of prime minister. The first consultations were to take place today, July 10, and the PAS faction is expected on Saturday, July 11, at the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova.

The consultations are taking place in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and aim to nominate a candidate for the position of prime minister, in order to form a new Government.

At the end of last week, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced that he was stepping down after eight months in office.

According to the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova, in the event of the prime minister’s resignation, the entire Government resigns. At the same time, the supreme law stipulates that in the event of the prime minister’s resignation, the Executive only performs the functions of managing public affairs until the members of a new Government are sworn in.
