Acting Deputy Prime Minister to Xinhua News Agency: Relations and cooperation between Moldova and China have significant development potential

The relations between the Republic of Moldova and China have significant development potential, and our country is ready to work together to strengthen a mutually beneficial partnership. Acting Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi made the statement  in an interview to Xinhua News Agency.

In the interview recently granted to the Chinese agency, the official noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states, the Republic of Moldova and China have built cooperation based on mutual respect and the development of pragmatic projects in several areas.

“China and the Republic of Moldova have enormous opportunities for cooperation in the future, and Moldova is ready to work closely with China to develop and strengthen a mutually beneficial partnership between the two countries,” Mihai Popșoi said.

The acting Deputy Prime Minister recalled his visit to China, carried out in May this year, which he said gave him a clearer picture of the country’s level of development and of the potential of bilateral relations.

“We very much want to strengthen economic ties with China. I was deeply impressed by China’s development and by the enormous potential of our bilateral relations. The Republic of Moldova aims to intensify economic exchanges with China and to explore opportunities in areas such as high-value agriculture, biotechnological production, and the automotive industry,” Popșoi specified.

According to the official, the participation of the Republic of Moldova in the China International Import Expo represents an important opportunity to promote the country’s products and image on the Chinese market. For the first time, Moldova is to have a national pavilion at the ninth edition of the expo, which will take place in November 2026 in Shanghai.

“We want to make the most of this opportunity, especially since there is a generous and friendly offer from China for a country like the Republic of Moldova to be more present on the Chinese market,” the Deputy Prime Minister declared.

Mihai Popșoi also mentioned the importance of cooperation projects in the energy sector, highlighting the role of the photovoltaic power plant built with China’s support in strengthening the energy security of the Republic of Moldova and in developing the renewable energy sector.

“This project is of particular importance for strengthening the energy security of the Republic of Moldova, for creating opportunities to use modern technologies in the field of renewable energy, and for developing the green energy sector,” the official said.

At the same time, the acting Deputy Prime Minister advocated for expanding cooperation in the fields of culture and education, noting that people-to-people ties, culture, and language are important elements that bring the two peoples closer.

“Culture, language, and people-to-people contacts are things that unite us,” Mihai Popșoi concluded.

Popșoi paid an official visit to the People’s Republic of China on 21 - 25 May, at the invitation of Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The Republic of Moldova and China established diplomatic relations on 30 January 1992. The two countries have signed 61 agreements in areas such as trade and economic cooperation, mutual protection of investments, avoidance of double taxation on income and capital, air services, consular affairs, youth, education, tourism, health, culture, and others, as well as five draft agreements.
