Moldovan parliament speaker says Russia triggers tensions, seeks to sow fear by unauthorized overflights of airspace

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu has said that the unauthorized overflight of Moldova’s airspace by drones was part of a strategy employed by the Russian Federation on Europe’s eastern flank, in order to trigger tensions and instill fear. The speaker made statements to this effect today before the parliament’s plenary meeting, after more drones had entered the country’s airspace.

“This is not only about Moldova. Russia is applying the same strategy across the entire eastern flank. It does not resort to direct actions, but by flying over the airspace in an unauthorized way, it provokes tensions and seeks to instill fear in the Baltic countries, Finland and Poland,” Igor Grosu said.

The parliament speaker said that similar incidents had also been reported in other countries of the region and emphasized the need for enhanced vigilance.

“This is the Russian Federation’s tactic, and we must be very vigilant,” Grosu said.

Referring to the incidents that occurred today morning, Grosu said that the Interior Ministry and the Defence Ministry were monitoring the situation, while the authorities are working to strengthen interception capabilities.
