Republic of Moldova and UNESCO to strengthen cooperation in education, culture and combating information manipulation

The Republic of Moldova and UNESCO aim to strengthen cooperation in areas such as cultural heritage, education, artificial intelligence and combating information manipulation, following a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi and UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany, held in New York.

The discussions focused on priorities on the agenda of relations between the Republic of Moldova and UNESCO, including leveraging the organization’s expertise to support the country’s accession process to the European Union.

Mihai Popșoi highlighted the importance of the Republic of Moldova’s role within the UNESCO Executive Board for the 2025–2029 period and noted that this platform could be used to promote initiatives relevant to the country.

The officials examined opportunities to develop cooperation in the fields of cultural and viticultural heritage, as well as to advance projects in education and artificial intelligence.

A separate topic of the discussions was combating information manipulation and foreign interference. In this context, UNESCO’s involvement in the Council of Europe’s ad hoc Committee on Information Manipulation and Foreign Interference was also addressed. The committee’s first plenary meeting is scheduled to take place in Strasbourg on October 27–28.

At the end of the meeting, the two officials reaffirmed their willingness to strengthen the partnership between the Republic of Moldova and UNESCO and to turn the discussed areas into concrete cooperation initiatives.

The Republic of Moldova became a full member of UNESCO on May 27, 1992.
