VIDEO // Prime Minister - interview with CNN: We welcome United States involved in energy support projects for Moldova

The United States is involved in support projects for Moldova, particularly in the energy sector, and Chișinău is advocating for their expansion, as “a stronger Moldova also helps Ukraine.” The message was conveyed by Prime Minister Vasile Tofan, who gave an interview to CNN journalist Jim Sciutto on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

During the interview, the prime minister spoke about the partnership with the United States, regional security, and the Republic of Moldova’s resilience in the face of Russian information aggression.


“We welcome the fact that the United States is involved in support projects for Moldova. I am referring especially to our energy independence and the assistance provided to connect the Republic of Moldova electrically with Romania and, further, with Ukraine—the 400 kV Strășeni–Gutinaș power line. We would like to have more such projects. A stronger Moldova also helps Ukraine,” said Vasile Tofan.


The official added that in recent years, the country has faced propaganda, disinformation, and attempts by Russia to destabilize it, but, according to him, “our country has managed to withstand them.”


“Russia tried to destabilize our country and invested hundreds of millions of dollars in this effort. Nevertheless, pro-European forces won. From this perspective, I believe that the Republic of Moldova is an example of how this Russian information aggression can be countered. I am proud that our country has managed to withstand this information aggression,” the prime minister emphasized.


The prime minister also noted that Russia continues to attempt to destabilize the region, but there is no imminent danger to the Republic of Moldova.

Among the solutions for countering interference from Moscow, Vasile Tofan mentioned a free press and strengthened security institutions.


“I believe I can mention a strong media sector here. Likewise, we must not be too naive about the tools Russia uses, which means having strong security services—something we have strengthened here in Moldova,” said Vasile Tofan.


Regarding the recent drone incidents, Prime Minister Vasile Tofan described them as acts of intimidation.

At the same time, the head of government reiterated that European integration is the national project of the Republic of Moldova, representing both economic development and security.


“Europe is the direction on which we are focusing. The European Union is our national project. We are trying to bring the country into the European Union. For us, the European Union means not only access to a large commercial market, but also a security project. As for NATO, we are a neutral country and, for the time being, intend to remain neutral. Therefore, there are no plans to join NATO,” Vasile Tofan concluded.




Vasile Tofan is visiting New York from September 23 to 26 to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The official will hold several bilateral meetings and deliver a speech during the plenary session of the UN General Assembly.
