Moldova seeks to diversify imports of gas, oil products from Azerbaijan
Diversifying sources of natural gas and oil products from Azerbaijan is among the priorities of the Moldovan-Azerbaijani cooperation, discussed by Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi and Azerbaijan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Jeyhun Bayramov in New York.
The officials discussed strengthening the partnership between the two countries, boosting the economic and trade relations, attracting investment and developing joint projects. The two ministers noted the cooperation between Chisinau and Baku and reviewed the priorities for the coming period.
An important topic of the discussions was the energy situation in Moldova. Mihai Popsoi reiterated the authorities’ interest in diversifying sources of natural gas and oil products from Azerbaijan, as well as in developing projects in the field of renewable energy.
“It is important to facilitate and expand contacts between companies from the two countries,” the Moldovan diplomacy head emphasized.
The two officials also discussed organizing, by the end of the year, the seventh meeting of the Moldovan-Azerbaijani Intergovernmental Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation. The meeting is expected to take place in Chisinau, and Mihai Popsoi invited his Azerbaijani counterpart to visit Moldova.
The agenda of the meeting also included the cooperation within international organizations and regional developments. The ministers discussed, among other issues, the consequences of the war in Ukraine for Moldova, including repeated violations of its airspace and incidents involving Russian drones that crashed on the country’s territory.
The diplomatic relations between Moldova and Azerbaijan were established on May 29, 1992.
