Republic of Moldova reaffirms commitment to refugee protection at UN meeting dedicated to 1951 Convention

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova’s commitment to protecting refugees and respecting the principles of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees at a high-level meeting marking 75 years since the document’s adoption.

In his address, Mihai Popșoi presented the Republic of Moldova’s experience in managing the influx of refugees generated by Russia’s war against Ukraine and highlighted the contribution of the authorities, civil society, and citizens in providing the necessary protection and assistance to refugees.

“Since February 2022, the Republic of Moldova has provided shelter to more than 140,000 Ukrainians, mainly women and children, elderly people, and persons with disabilities,” the minister said.

According to Mihai Popșoi, the authorities have focused on moving from emergency assistance measures to sustainable solutions that ensure refugees receive protection, access to essential services, and opportunities for inclusion, while also supporting host communities.

The Moldovan Foreign Minister stressed the importance of international solidarity and partnerships in transforming the humanitarian response into long-term policies and solutions. According to the official, these should provide refugees with real opportunities for inclusion and participation in host societies.

Mihai Popșoi reaffirmed that the Republic of Moldova will continue to ensure the protection and inclusion of refugees, in line with its international obligations and the objectives of the Global Compact on Refugees.

The Convention relating to the Status of Refugees was adopted in Geneva in 1951 and is one of the main international legal instruments in the field of refugee protection.
