New U.S. Ambassador to Moldova Joseph Mark Burkhalter presents copies of credentials

Designated United States Ambassador to Moldova Joseph Mark Burkhalter today presented the copies of his credentials to the Chief of the State Diplomatic Protocol, Eugen Buga, during a ceremony held at the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The presentation of copies of the letters of accreditation is one of the official stages marking the beginning of an ambassador’s term. According to the U.S. Embassy, Joseph Mark Burkhalter has pledged to contribute, during his tenure, to strengthening and developing the relations between the United States and Moldova.

The new American ambassador arrived in Chisinau at the end of last week together with his wife. During his first days in the Moldovan capital, he visited the city center, the Stefan cel Mare and Holy Public Garden and the monument to Stefan cel Mare, as well as the parliament, government and presidential buildings.

Joseph Mark Burkhalter in June 2026 was nominated by United States President Donald Trump to serve as ambassador to Moldova and was subsequently confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Before being nominated for the post in Chisinau, he had been proposed for the position of U.S. ambassador to Norway.

Burkhalter has 18 years of experience in Georgia state politics, where he represented a district in northern Fulton County, near Atlanta, in the General Assembly. In the state legislature, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and Speaker Pro Tempore. He also worked in real estate development and served as a senior adviser at Dentons US LLP, where he worked on public policy and economic development projects.

Previously, the position of U.S. ambassador to Chișinău was held by Kent D. Logsdon, whose term ended in May 2024. Since August 2025, the U.S. diplomatic mission in Chisinau has been headed by Chargé d’Affaires Nick Pietrowicz.
