Moldova's Foreign Minister discusses expanding bilateral cooperation with Chilean and Tunisian counterparts in New York

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi held separate meetings in New York with foreign ministers of the Republic of Chile and the Republic of Tunisia, Francisco Pérez Mackenna and Mohamed Ali Nafti. The discussions focused on developing bilateral relations, intensifying economic and trade cooperation, attracting investment and collaborating within international organizations.

During his meeting with Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna, the officials discussed cooperation in agriculture and energy and highlighted the need to boost interinstitutional dialogue. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this would facilitate contacts between business communities and contribute to increasing and diversifying trade and investment exchanges.

Mihai Popșoi expressed the Republic of Moldova’s openness to attracting Chilean investment and developing joint projects, including by harnessing the opportunities offered by the National Industrial Development Program.

The two ministers also discussed cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and Chile within the UN and agreed to maintain communication on issues of mutual interest, both on the organization’s agenda and on other international platforms.

During his discussion with Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Ali Nafti, the Moldovan official addressed ways to develop Moldovan-Tunisian relations and cooperation in the economic and educational fields. The officials also discussed cooperation within the UN and the International Organisation of Francophonie.

Mihai Popșoi emphasized the Republic of Moldova’s interest in boosting trade exchanges and promoting Moldovan products on the Tunisian market, particularly honey, nuts, fruit, and processed vegetables.

Cooperation in education was another topic of the meeting. The officials noted the growing number of Tunisian students pursuing their studies in the Republic of Moldova.

At the same time, the ministers agreed on measures to develop the bilateral legal framework. In the coming period, an agreement on the abolition of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic, official, and special passports is expected to be signed, along with memoranda of understanding on economic diplomacy and cooperation between the diplomatic institutions of the two countries.

The parties also discussed organizing the first round of political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova and Tunisia and confirmed their readiness to continue bilateral dialogue.

The meetings took place on the sidelines of Mihai Popșoi’s participation in the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, held in New York.
