Czech Senator: Moldova belongs at European table and is part of European project

The Czech Republic supports the continuation of Moldova’s accession negotiations with the European Union and advocates opening new negotiating chapters by late 2026. The message was conveyed by Pavel Fischer, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security of the Czech Senate during a joint press conference with Doina Gherman, Deputy Speaker.



At the event, Doina Gherman said she had requested the support of the Czech authorities for developing renewable energy generation and storage capacities, as well as expertise in energy resource management, amid the declaration of a state of emergency in the energy sector for a period of 60 days.


“We called upon the Czech authorities for support in developing renewable energy generation and storage capacities, as well as for the Czech Republic’s expertise in energy resource management,” Gherman said.


The Deputy Speaker praised the financial support previously provided by the Czech Republic through the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund. According to her, the Czech Republic provided 415,000 euros in 2025, while its total contribution to the fund since 2022 has exceeded 16 million lei.


“It is assistance that reaches directly the people who have been affected,” Doina Gherman noted.


Another topic discussed was Moldova’s European path. The Deputy Speaker said that the Czech Republic is an important partner in this process and that the authorities in Chișinău are counting on its support for opening the next groups of negotiating chapters by the end of the year.


“We are not asking for shortcuts or favors. We want to be assessed based on the reforms we implement and the results we deliver, and our objective is to complete the accession negotiations by late 2028,” the Deputy Speaker said.






For his part, Pavel Fischer reaffirmed the Czech Republic’s support for Moldova’s European path and stated that the country belongs in the European project.


“Moldova belongs at the European table and is part of the European project. It is a window of opportunity that opens very rarely, and we must take advantage of it,” Pavel Fischer said.


The official noted that in August, the Czech Senate adopted a resolution supporting Moldova’s European path. According to Fischer, the document received the support of a majority of Czech senators.

Pavel Fischer also supported opening the next negotiating chapters and expressed hope that this would be achieved by late 2026.


“We support opening the next negotiating chapters. We believe it would be best for them to be opened by late 2026,” the Czech senator said.


Economic cooperation issues were also addressed during the conference. Doina Gherman noted that Moldova remains a priority country for Czech development assistance until 2030.

According to the Deputy Speaker, approximately 45 companies with Czech capital are already operating in Moldova. She emphasized that there is potential for expanding cooperation in the fields of energy, agriculture, information technology and social development.

A group of Czech senators, members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security of the Czech Senate is visiting Moldova on September 21 - 23.

During the visit, the Czech senators will hold meetings with President of Moldova Maia Sandu, Speaker Igor Grosu, Deputy Speaker Doina Gherman, as well as members of the Committee on National Security, Defense and Public Order, chaired by Lilian Carp. The delegation’s agenda also includes discussions with Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri, Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin, and Minister of Defense Anatolie Nosatîi.

The Czech senators are also scheduled to meet with State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Valeriu Mija, Director of the Intelligence and Security Service Alexandru Musteața, and Head of the General Inspectorate of Police Viorel Cernăuțeanu.
