Crime victims to gain easier access to support and compensation
Crime victims will have easier access to the services they need and to compensation, while the support provided will be tailored to each person’s situation. The Government approved the draft new Law on the Rehabilitation of Crime Victims, which strengthens their protection and aligns national legislation with European standards.
The new law expands the number of people eligible for protection, which will also be granted to family members of people who have lost their lives as a result of crimes.
At the same time, the assistance provided will be tailored to the needs of each victim. An individual assessment will help identify the person’s situation and vulnerabilities, so that they can be directed to the specialized services they need.
Victims will be able to benefit from counseling and information, psychological and medical assistance, shelter, state-guaranteed legal assistance, and financial compensation. In urgent situations, some services may be provided even if the person does not yet have all the necessary documents, which can be submitted later.
Obtaining compensation will also become simpler. Victims will have fewer formalities to complete and will be exempt from certain fees and enforcement costs.
In addition, the new law establishes procedures for cases in which the victim lives in one country while the crime was committed in another. The draft law specifies the responsible authorities and the way requests for compensation will be transmitted between states.
