National railway infrastructure program for 2026–2030 approved by Government: Railway to be modernized and passenger transport expanded

Train travel will become more accessible, and more localities will be able to benefit from railway connections with Chișinău. The Government has approved the National Railway Infrastructure Program for 2026–2030, which provides for investments in the repair and modernization of the railway network, as well as the development of passenger rail transport.

By late 2026, Ungheni–Chișinău–Ungheni service will be maintained, and the launch of Strășeni–Chișinău–Sângera and Bender–Chișinău–Bender is planned. For 2027, the continued operation of these services and the extension of certain routes are planned, depending on available resources. The new services will be launched after electronic passenger counting systems are installed on the trains. 

Particular attention is also being paid to the connection with Chișinău International Airport Eugen Doga. Revaca Station will be arranged so that passengers on certain rail services can transfer to and from the airport. The development of the railway connection between the airport and Chișinău’s Northern Bus Station is also planned, including the construction of passenger platforms in Sângera and in the area of the Northern Bus Station.

The program also includes works on several important sections of the railway network. Work will continue on Cahul–Giurgiulești section, repairs will be carried out on Iargara–Cahul section, and work will be completed on Prut-2–Fălciu line, which provides the railway connection with Romania.

Investments in infrastructure will allow for the removal of certain traffic restrictions and an increase in train speeds on the repaired sections. The aim is for rail transport to become safer and more efficient for both passengers and freight transport.

For 2026, 300 million lei have been allocated to railway infrastructure and public passenger transport services. Of this amount, more than 288 million lei are earmarked for infrastructure maintenance, repairs, and development, while approximately 11.7 million lei will support passenger services. Under the new mechanism, the state will be able to finance infrastructure maintenance and development separately from public passenger transport services.
