Moldovan MP says Moldova achieves largest European funding in history, moving towards sustainable energy independence
The head of the parliamentary commission for foreign policy and European integration, Ina Coseru, has unveiled a summary of the commission's activities in the context of the current parliament concluding its mandate. The lawmaker highlighted the major progress in the process of European integration, as well as in strengthening the energy independence of Moldova.
"Moldova has achieved the largest European funding in history. We are connecting more closely to the European Union," said Ina Coseru.
According to the deputy, the signing of the funding agreement of over 1.9 billion euros, within the Economic Growth Plan, represents a crucial step in the country's European way.
"This is a support meant for key reforms, investments in infrastructure and the strengthening of the energy system," Coseru noted.
The MP emphasized that the plan covered all areas stipulated in the EU acquis and included concrete projects in the fields of transportation, energy and regional development, which are to be implemented over the next three years.
The lawmaker also highlighted the progress regarding accession to the European Union.
"Moldova has got candidate country status and the process of evaluating national legislation is already underway. By autumn, the authorities will complete this technical exercise and we will be able to officially open accession negotiations. Our effort is to achieve this goal in record time," added Ina Coseru.
Another important point in the presented summary concerns the strengthening of energy independence.
"While in 2021, Moldova was almost fully dependent on resources from the Russian Federation, today we no longer consume Russian natural gas and are connected to the European energy market. In 2023, we managed to procure gas from Romania and Ukraine, and starting from January 2025 we have no longer been purchasing electricity from the Transnistrian region. This is a major strategic achievement," said the deputy.
At the same time, Coseru underlined the increasing share of renewable energy in the national mix. On certain days, they covered even 70 per cent of total consumption. Additionally, energy infrastructure projects are advancing rapidly.
"The Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line will be operational by the end of the year, covering almost half of the domestic demand. Two other energy interconnection projects are in progress," she also said.
In conclusion, Ina Coseru said that the parliamentary elections due on September 28, 2025, would be decisive for the continuation of the country's European path.
"The coming years may bring Moldova's accession to the European Union. It is crucial not to waste time and to remain on the path of reforms. We have lost decades with corrupt governments. Now, we have the chance for real change."
In the current legislative body, which concludes its mandate on July 11, ten standing parliamentary commissions are active: the Legal, Appointments, and Immunities Commission, the Economy, Budget, and Finance Commission, the Foreign Policy and European Integration Commission, the National Security, Defense, and Public Order Commission, the Public Administration and Regional Development Commission, the Social Protection, Health, and Family Commission, the Education and Research Commission, the Culture, Youth, Sport and Media Commission, the Environment, Climate, and Green Transition Commission and the Human Rights and Interethnic Relations Commissions.
The standing committees are elected for the entire duration of the legislature. The numerical and nominal composition of the standing commissions is established by parliament decision, taking into account the proportional representation of the parliamentary factions.
