Moldovan parliament speaker says Flag Day about all Moldovans, about belief that Moldova can, must succeed
Flag Day is about us all, about the belief that Moldova can and must succeed. Let's honor it in what we do every day, through solidarity, truth and courage. Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today conveyed a message to this effect, at the solemn ceremony dedicated to State Flag Day.
According to the official, the State Flag Day invites us to reflect not only on a symbol, but also on who we are as a people and what future we want to build together.
“Our tricolor witnessed the national revival of the Republic of Moldova. It was hoisted in moments of courage and hope, as well as in challenging times, when we were called to defend our freedom and independence. Under this flag, we moved forward even when the road was tough, convinced that our country deserves more - deserves peace, justice and dignity,” Igor Grosu said.
The speaker emphasized that the tricolor reminded Moldovans of their duty to bequeath to our children a country worth living in. Igor Grosu also said that the courage and sacrifice of those who had fought for it “obliges us to work every day for a free, dignified and prosperous Moldova.”
“The Flag Day is more than a commemoration; it is a renewed commitment, a day to honor those who fought, so that this flag could be freely hoisted. The courage and sacrifice of those who fought obliges us to work day by day for a free, dignified and prosperous Moldova. In front of the flag, there is no 'us' and 'them', it doesn't matter what language we speak or which corner of the country we come from, what matters is what unites us - love for the country, mutual respect and the sincere wish to see Moldova flourish,” said Igor Grosu.
The official referred to the moments of pride when the flag of Moldova was raised at the Olympic Games in Paris.
“We felt the emotion of every competition. For the first time since gaining independence, our sportspeople won such a large number of medals. The year 2024 was the most fruitful in our sports history, with the most flags raised on the highest podiums. Our tricolor united us, made us proud and made us known worldwide,” stated Igor Grosu.
The speaker urged citizens to carry the flag not only on buildings or on their chests, but also in their souls.
“Let's honor it in what we do every day, through solidarity, truth, courage and honest work. This is the only way to prove that we love Moldova, not just through words, but through deeds. The Flag Day is about us all, it's about the belief that Moldova can and must succeed. Happy State Flag Day. Happy birthday, Moldova,” added Igor Grosu.
The State Flag Day is celebrated in Moldova today — a symbol of the country’s sovereignty, independence, and national identity. The holiday was established by the Moldovan parliament on April 23, 2010. The tricolor was officially designated as the state flag on April 27, 1990, and today it marks the 35th anniversary of its adoption.
The State Flag of Moldova is a major official symbol of sovereignty and independence. It is a rectangular cloth, with the ratio of the height to the length of 1:2, vertically divided into three equal parts, starting from the hoist in the colors blue, yellow and red, with the image of the State Coat of Arms of Moldova in the middle of the yellow field, whose width constitutes 1/5 of the flag's length.
The colors of the tricolor — blue, yellow, and red — each have a strong significance. Blue means a clear sky, freedom and faith. Yellow symbolizes wheat, prosperity and well-being. Red represents the blood shed for freedom, the courage, and solidarity of the Moldovans.
