Moldovan president says Moldova not to be intimidated

President Maia Sandu has said that Russian drones had entered the airspace of Moldova right on the eve of Independence Day, describing the incident as an attempt at intimidation. In this context, the head of state reaffirmed that the authorities would continue to invest in strengthening air defense.

The statements were made during a joint press conference held in Chisinau together with President of Romania Nicusor Dan and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, who are visiting our country on the occasion of Independence Day.

The head of state said that Russia’s war against Ukraine has effects that go beyond its borders and recalled that the airspace of Moldova and Romania had been violated repeatedly.

“The sky above us shows most clearly how important our cooperation is. Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine is felt beyond its borders: the airspace of Moldova and Romania has been violated dozens of times. Even today, on the eve of the holiday, Russian drones entered our airspace in a clear attempt to intimidate us. I say clearly and firmly, in the presence of our friends: we will not be intimidated!”, Maia Sandu said.

The Moldovan president noted that the authorities would continue to invest in air defense to protect citizens and infrastructure. At the same time, the head of state called on the countries in the region to support Ukraine.

“We are investing in air defense, so that we can protect our people and infrastructure. And we call on all the countries of the free world to help Ukraine strengthen its air defense. Now, before this winter,” the head of state underlined.

Five drones flew unauthorized over the airspace of Moldova on the night of August 27, being detected near the border with Ukraine, in the context of air attacks launched by the Russian Federation against Ukraine. In addition, a flying object was found crashed on the ground near the Chisinau–Basarabeasca road. Law enforcement officers intervened and secured the area.
