Romania supports European path of Moldova; Romanian president: “It is an example for all candidate states”

Romania supports the European path of Moldova and the country is an example for all states currently in the process of joining the European Union. The statement was made today in Chisinau by the President of Romania Nicusor Dan.

The President of Romania reaffirmed his support for the efforts made by Ukraine and Moldova on their path to EU accession.

“Of course, we discussed the European path of the two countries, which Romania supports, and in this respect, Moldova is an example for all European countries that are in the process of accession. I am convinced that this type of interaction will continue at all administrative levels, and I am confident that, with the maturity we have already demonstrated, we will ensure for the citizens of our countries the stability and prosperity they want,” declared Nicusor Dan at the press conference held together with the President Maia Sandu and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.

President Maia Sandu highlighted the constant support provided by Romania to Moldova in difficult moments and along the country’s European path. The head of state underlined that Romania had supported the European cause of the Republic of Moldova even before its own accession to the European Union.

“Romania has been by our side at every turning point: in the difficult early years, in energy crises, in moments when others were watching us from a distance. It did so naturally, as a brother or sister would. Romania carried our cause in Europe when our voice was still weak. And when it joined the European Union in 2007, Moldovans saw with their own eyes that this path is achievable,” said Maia Sandu.

In an exclusive interview given with MOLDPRES, the European Union’s Ambassador to Moldova emphasized the progress made by the country in the EU accession process and assured that Brussels would continue to support Chisinau on the path of reforms.

“The EU will stand by Moldova as a trusted partner until the moment of accession,” said Iwona Piórko.

At present, Moldova has opened negotiations on two of the six clusters of the EU accession process – “Fundamentals” and “External Relations.” According to the EU Ambassador, the other clusters are also ready to be opened, the next step being the adoption of the necessary decisions by the EU member states.

President of Romania Nicusor Dan is in Chisinau today, at the invitation of President Maia Sandu, to participate in events dedicated to the Independence Day of Moldova. President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky is in Chisinau as well.

The three heads of state today evening took part in the Independence concert organized on the Great National Assembly Square, where they addressed messages to the citizens of Moldova.
