VIDEO // President at solemn Parliament session: Our independence is being tested and must be protected every day

Our independence is being tested and must be protected every day. To succeed, we must be united, know our history, honor our heroes, and work together to shelter the Republic of Moldova within the European Union. President Maia Sandu conveyed the message at the solemn session of Parliament dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova.

The official emphasized that on the eve of marking 35 years of Independence, we respectfully remember the people who laid the foundations of the National Liberation Movement, many of whom are no longer with us.

“We appreciate the courage of the people who, on the morning of August 27, 1991, came to Chișinău from all regions of the country to claim their right to freedom. In these days, we celebrate the courage of the deputies of the Parliament of Independence, who voted for the Declaration of Independence and adopted many important laws and acts that enabled the creation and functioning of the state of the Republic of Moldova. In these days, we express our deep gratitude to the people who with weapons in their hands defended the independence of the Republic of Moldova in the Transnistrian war,” said Maia Sandu.

The head of state praised the honest work of all citizens of the Republic of Moldova who, over these 35 years, have contributed to the development and consolidation of the Republic of Moldova as a state.

“Our independence is being tested and must be protected every day. To succeed, we must be united, know our history, honor our heroes, and work together to shelter the Republic of Moldova within the European Union. We also need, above all, the enthusiasm of the people who, in the 1990s, managed to obtain independence, to believe in the future of the Republic of Moldova, and to work for this future. We thank the generation of the National Liberation Movement, we thank the deputies of the Parliament of Independence. Happy anniversary to you, and happy anniversary to the Republic of Moldova!” added Maia Sandu.

Parliament met today in a solemn session dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the proclamation of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova. The event has an official, solemn, and commemorative character, highlighting historical memory, the contribution of those who participated in the proclamation of independence, and the responsibility of today’s generations to strengthen the values for which the independent state was proclaimed.

The session brought together representatives of Parliament, the Presidency, the Government, as well as of the Public Association “Parliament of Independence”. The event is taking place in the historic hall of the Presidency building where, 35 years ago, the Declaration of Independence was adopted.

During the session, a Book of Honor was opened, in which participants can record messages and reflections on the affirmation and consolidation of the independence of the Republic of Moldova over these 35 years. Later, the Book of Honor will be displayed in Parliament so that the general public can leave messages.

In addition, the exhibition “Memory of Independence” will be inaugurated, bringing together exhibits from the collections of the Museum, the Archive, and the Library of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, as well as from the holdings of the National Archives Agency.
