Moldovan president speaks before citizens on Great National Assembly Square

The Republic of Moldova turns 35 today. It is a young country, but free and mature enough to write its own future. We must continue to work for our country, to develop it, to help it grow, to make it strong, just as our parents and grandparents wished. President Maia Sandu today evening made statements to this effect on the stage in the Great National Assembly Square, where a concert dedicated to Independence Day is being held.

The head of state took to the stage together with the President of Romania Nicusor Dan and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who are visiting Chișinău.

“The Republic of Moldova turns 35 today. It is like a 35-year-old man or woman. We have a young country, but free and mature enough to write its own future, and it is writing its own future in European letters and Latin script,” said Maia Sandu.

The President urged young people to enjoy the country’s independence and to continue to protect it.

“Dear young people, enjoy the independence that our parents and grandparents have given us. They fought and offered us this independence. We must protect it. We, those of today, must ensure peace and freedom for you. You must work for the tomorrow of the Republic of Moldova,” said the head of state.

Maia Sandu noted that we must continue to work for the country, to develop it, to help it grow, to make it strong, just as our parents and grandparents wanted.

“Today we can sing our songs, we can dance our traditional dances, we can study, we can develop because the generation of the National Liberation Movement gave us independence, the independence of the Republic of Moldova. And today, out of respect for that generation, we must continue to work for our country, to develop it, to help it grow, to make it strong, just as our parents and grandparents wished. Thirty-five years ago, here on this square, they raised a hand for the country. They raised a hand for freedom. Let us also raise a hand, out of respect for them and with confidence in our own strength. Raise your hand, all those who love their country! Happy Independence Day, Republic of Moldova!” President Maia Sandu said.

The Republic of Moldova today celebrates 35 years since the proclamation of Independence. On this occasion, Chișinău is being visited by President of Romania, Nicusor Dan and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The schedule of events dedicated to Independence Day began in the morning with flower-laying ceremonies at the “Grieving Mother” monument at the “Eternity” Memorial Complex and at the monument of the ruler Stephen the Great and Holy. In the afternoon, a military parade was held on the Great National Assembly Square. The evening culminated with a concert.

The events dedicated to the 35 years of independence took place throughout the day in the capital and across the entire country.

The Republic of Moldova proclaimed its independence on 27 August 1991, when the parliament adopted the Declaration of Independence.
