Nicu Popescu steps down as deputy

Nicu Popescu's work, appointed today as a special envoy for European affairs and strategic partnerships, will focus on political dialogue and the necessary partnerships with EU institutions, member states, parliamentarians, media, cultural sectors and Moldova's strategic partners.

Nicu Popescu emphasized that he is stepping down from his deputy mandate to "continue to contribute to the EU accession process and to strengthen European support for the Republic of Moldova."

“In this role, I will focus on political dialogue and necessary partnerships with EU institutions, member states, parliamentarians, media, cultural sectors, and Moldova's strategic partners. I will work in close cooperation with the Presidency, Parliament, Government, Mihai Popșoi - Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Cristina Gherasimov - Office for European Integration. We have no time to waste: every dialogue, every friend, and every progress counts. We need unity, clarity, and confidence. The European path is a responsibility, and we will see it through to the end,” mentioned Nicu Popescu.

Today, President Maia Sandu signed the decree appointing Nicu Popescu as special envoy for European affairs and strategic partnerships. This position is aimed at strengthening the presidential institution's activity by involving specialists with profound expertise in strategically important domains for the country to achieve the priorities set by the president.

Nicu Popescu previously held the position of Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration. In this capacity, he led the diplomatic efforts of the Republic of Moldova to open EU accession negotiations, promoted the strengthening of relations with EU member states, USA, and other partners of our country. Nicu Popescu is the co-director of the European Security Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), based in Paris.
