Parliament speaker meets acting head of OSCE Mission to Moldova

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today had a meeting with Izabela Sylwia Hartmann, Acting Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova. During the discussion, the speaker reiterated Moldova’s firm commitment to the peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.

Igor Grosu stressed that the Moldovan authorities were closely monitoring the situation regarding respect for human rights on the left bank of Dniester, where “restrictions and practices that contradict international standards persist.”

“We appreciate the constant efforts of the OSCE Mission in the settlement process. I am sure that accession to the European Union will bring benefits to citizens on both banks of Dniester and will contribute to the reunification of the country. People on the left bank of Dniester deserve to be part of a democratic, developed state, that respects the rights of each citizen,” Igor Grosu said.

The OSCE Mission to Moldova started began its work on 23 April 1993. It is the only international organization with a permanent presence on both banks of the Dniester River, with offices in Chisinau, Tiraspol and Bender.

The Mission was established to facilitate a comprehensive and lasting political settlement of the Transnistrian conflict in all its aspects, strengthening the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders, and fully guaranteeing the human rights and political, economic and social rights of the population.

The mandate of the OSCE Mission to Moldova is renewed annually by consensus of all 57 participating states, including Moldova.
