Romanian foreign affairs minister comments on ban imposed on mayor of Chisinau

The decision to ban Ion Ceban and two other Moldovan citizens from entering Romania was taken ‘’for reasons of national security and ‘’it is up to the competent institutions whether to provide additional details on this matter.’’ Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Oana-Silvia Toiu today made statements to this effect at a press conference held in Chisinau.

According to the Romanian official, at this stage, there is no need to provide other   information on the subject.

‘’As you know well, Romania has imposed the measure of denying entry to its territory for three individuals - citizens of Moldova. This decision, once taken by Romania for reasons of national security, applies across the entire Schengen area, based on the regulations we have now. As for the details related to the justification of this decision, for us, national security prevails and it is up to the competent institutions whether to provide additional details. At this stage, it is not the case for this,’’ said Oana-Silvia Toiu.

Romania has recently issued an entry ban for Ion Ceban and two other Moldovan citizens. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) in Bucharest.

‘’For reasons of national security considerations, Romania has imposed the measure of denying entry to the national territory for Mr. Ion Ceban and two other citizens of Moldova. The decision is the responsibility of the competent institutions of Romania, in accordance with the regulations in force,’’ Romania's Foreign Affairs Ministry informed.

Mayor Ion Ceban described these actions as ‘’political reprisal.’’
