Former president of Moldovan Democratic Party detained in Greece
The former president of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM), Vladimir Plahotniuc, has been detained in Greece. The information today was confirmed by the General Police Inspectorate (IGP).
According to the IGP, the former leader of the Democrats was detained along with another Moldovan citizen.
“A short while ago, the official communication channels of Interpol from Athens, Greece, informed us that two Moldovan citizens have been detained. One of them is Vladimir Plahotniuc,” the IGP said.
The former PDM president, Vladimir Plahotniuc, was put on the wanted list in early February 2025, through INTERPOL.
According to the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (PA), an arrest warrant was issued for Vladimir Plahotniuc for the crime of money laundering, in connection with his role in the banking scheme from 2013-2015, through which one billion dollars was purloined from the banking system and the state budget. The investigation, generically called The Bank Fraud, is handled by PA.
