Speaker warns: Pro-Russian government would endanger Moldova's European future

Speaker Igor Grosu issued a strong warning to citizens today during a press conference about the risks posed by a takeover by pro-Russian forces in the context of the parliamentary elections on 28 September.

“Such a scenario would mean the loss of visas, halting our European path, nullifying the referendum vote, and even the risk of young Moldovans being sent to Putin's wars,” Grosu declared.

Dangers of Pro-Kremlin Government

Grosu mentioned that the return to power of pro-Russian parties would have serious consequences such as: limiting the voting rights of the diaspora, as outlined in a bill already registered by the current parliamentary opposition; nullifying the results of the referendum for European integration, won despite a “fierce battle” with massive financial resources from opponents; the danger of Moldova's involvement in the war launched by Russia against Ukraine, with the risk of young Moldovans becoming “cannon fodder” in foreign conflicts; blocking justice reforms and protecting those involved in corruption; international isolation and the loss of European support, including benefits related to free movement and funding for localities.

Stakes of 28 September elections

Igor Grosu emphasized that the election on 28 September is decisive and has only one round, which is why “every vote counts.”

“If we give the country a pro-European majority, then in 2028 we will be able to sign the treaty of accession to the European Union. It is a very close and achievable horizon, but only if we continue the reforms and maintain the European path,” said the PAS leader.

He highlighted that only a pro-European government can guarantee peace, stability, investments in communities, and respect from European partners.

Appeal to citizens and diaspora

In his speech, Grosu made a special appeal to the diaspora, emphasizing the decisive role of their vote.

“You are part of our body, of our family. Every time, the diaspora has done enormously for the country. That is why, on September 28, we must mobilize exemplarily and vote for peace, for development, and for Moldova's European future,” Grosu concluded.
