Spokesperson for Moldovan government reacts to alleged detention of Moldovan citizen in Russia

The spokesperson for the government, Daniel Voda, today warned that boosting of provocative actions by the Russian Federation against Moldovan citizens had been recently recorded.

In these conditions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) has already issued a travel alert, warning about the real risks for Moldovans who are in or intending to travel to Russia – including difficulties in accessing consular services.

Daniel Voda said that “official Russian institutions often publish information that cannot be verified from independent sources, accompanied by so-called 'incomplete or distorted 'evidence'”. According to him, in this case, the public messages transmitted by the Russian Federation “should be treated with caution, in the absence of objective confirmations”.

“Moldova’s position is firm: such practices are part of a string of destabilizing actions, meant to involve our country in informational provocations. We will not give in to these attempts and stay focused on what matters – to protect our citizens,” said the government’s spokesman.

The official urged Moldovan citizens in Russia to keep in touch with the Embassy of Moldova in Moscow and to seek consular support, if necessary.

“Moldova is on a clear path: the of peace, unity and a future-oriented society. We will not allow this course to be affected by hostile actions and fabricated press headlines,” concluded Daniel Voda.

A man from Moldova was detained in the city of Ryazan, Russian Federation, being accused of espionage in favor of Ukraine. The announcement was made by the Federal Security Service (FSB) of the Russian Federation, in a statement distributed on July 21.

According to the cited source, the Moldovan allegedly transmitted classified information regarding strategic military infrastructure targets in Russia to the Ukrainian special services. The FSB specifies that he acted “in the interest of GUR (Main Directorate of Intelligence of Moldova)”, but does not provide additional details about the suspect's identity or the exact circumstances of his detention.
