New contingent of Moldova's National Army detached to KFOR mission

A new National Army contingent of 41 soldiers has been detached to Kosovo, to participate in the international peacekeeping mission KFOR, conducted under NATO auspices.

This is the 23rd Moldovan contingent, which will operate within the multinational unit alongside soldiers from the Italian Army. This mission reaffirms Moldova's commitment to peace, stability and security in the Western Balkans.

“This is proof that the National Army has become, over time, a reliable partner in international missions. Our soldiers have proved that they have the same capabilities as NATO allies and are appreciated internationally,” said Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii.

Chargé d'Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Moldova Kevin Covert noted that the KFOR mission, with contributions from 26 nations, symbolized the commitment of the USA to peace and stability in Europe.

“Remember that your mission is vital for regional peace, and your leadership denotes Moldova's commitment to peace and stability. Today, we honor this commitment, courage, dedication expertise, and the service of the 23rd contingent of the National Army to KFOR.”

Moldova’s military presence in international missions under NATO shows not only the country's commitment to the values of global peace and security, but also the strengthening of the partnership relationship with the North Atlantic Alliance.

“For 40 years, NATO has supported peace and stability in the Western Balkans, and our commitment stays firm, including for KFOR. The security of the Western Balkans means more security throughout the Euro-Atlantic area,” said Michaela Guerard Šimák, Head of the NATO Liaison Office in Moldova.

Commander of the National Army’s Contingent in the KFOR Mission, Major Ion Badarau said that the soldiers had undergone rigorous testing and exercises, with the best-prepared being selected, both women and men.

“For the 41 soldiers designated for participation in the KFOR mission, the detachment phase represents both a great honor and an obvious responsibility. We have the opportunity to represent the National Army and Moldova in Kosovo, alongside soldiers from over 20 countries, who contribute to maintaining old stability in the region. Our preparation was thorough and complex, together with our comrades.”

Moldova has been participating in the KFOR mission since 2014, constantly   contributing to international peacekeeping efforts.
