Ukraine marks Independence Day

Today Ukraine celebrates National Day. The event marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence from the USSR on 24 August 1991.

For the fourth consecutive year, Ukraine marks Independence Day against the backdrop of a devastating war initiated by the Russian Federation in February 2022. Independence is the greatest achievement of the Ukrainian people, states the Foreign Minister from Kyiv, who, in an interview for TVR Moldova, emphasized that despite the war initiated by Russia, the country continues to develop and prosper economically.

"The greatest achievement of Ukraine is independence; the Ukrainian people have a state, a society of their own with the ability to make the strategic, geopolitical choice in our foreign policy, which is the affiliation to the Euro-Atlantic space and the European community. Ukraine has become a security contributor in the region. Today, the Ukrainian army is one of the strongest. For more than three years, we have been defending our homeland from Russian aggression. Despite the war, our economy prospers, we manage to control inflationary processes. The Russian enemy has no strategic objective in Ukraine. Since the beginning of the war – February 22, 2022, Ukraine has liberated 50% of the territories occupied by Russia, including Kherson. Ukraine has achieved performances in other areas as well, such as digitalization, we continue to develop, and during all this time, we have demonstrated our resilience," said Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Currently, the Republic of Moldova hosts over 120,000 Ukrainian citizens who have fled from the war, ensuring them the right to work, education, and healthcare. Last year in Chișinău, the Ukrainian House was opened, the Ukrainian community in the Republic of Moldova being active and engaging in various social-cultural activities. Chișinău is supported in the process of supporting Ukraine by Western states.

"Today we celebrate your unwavering will, boundless courage, and love for freedom, which shine like a beacon in the darkest times. This day is not just a date but an anthem in your souls that has not bowed to aggression and injustice. Moldova has opened its arms to thousands of Ukrainians, saving them from the horrors of the war initiated by Kremlin, finding here a temporary refuge. We see your pain and tears, but at the same time, we see your dignity and will to live. You are not guests, you are part of us. We are proud to share brotherly love with the Ukrainian people. Kremlin, with its hatred and lies, will never destroy these bonds that unite our hearts. We are one family," Moldova's Foreign Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi said.

Since the first day of the war, the Republic of Moldova has condemned Russian aggression and declared support for the Ukrainian people.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine were established on March 10, 1992. The bilateral legal framework includes over 160 acts, which regulate Moldovan-Ukrainian cooperation in various fields.

Ukraine is a state in Eastern Europe, located between Russia, the Republic of Moldova, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, and Belarus. The country is divided into 24 regions, has a total area of 603,700 square kilometers, and a population of 46,044 million inhabitants. The capital city is Kyiv.
