Today President Maia Sandu held a meeting with Prime Minister of Romania Ilie Bolojan, who is on a working visit to Chisinau.

The discussions focused on joint projects aimed at improving the lives of people on both banks of the Prut River, as well as issues related to regional security and the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. The head of state emphasized the importance of a joint effort to counter foreign interference seeking to undermine the democracies of both countries.

Romania remains the main trading partner of the Republic of Moldova. More than a third of our exports are oriented towards the Romanian market, and the economies of the two states are increasingly interconnected: about 1,700 Romanian companies operate in the Republic of Moldova, while over 8,000 companies with Moldovan capital operate in Romania, generating a turnover of over three billion euros and supporting more than 20,000 jobs.

To support the exchanges and bring people closer from both banks of the Prut River, starting 24 August coordinated control will be set up at Galați–Giurgiulești border crossing, a measure welcomed by President Maia Sandu. This will contribute to the fluidization of road traffic and facilitate economic connections.

The increasingly close integration of the economies is also reflected in strategic infrastructure and energy projects. The Republic of Moldova and Romania are building new road and rail bridges and connecting their energy systems to strengthen regional energy security. The work on Chișinău–Vulcănești high-voltage power line is nearing completion, with two other major connections – Bălți–Suceava and Strășeni–Gutinaș – to be carried out in the coming years.
