Around 500 attempts to bribe reported by police officers

Around 500 police officers reported attempted bribery last year. Reports in 2025 are approximately 474% higher than in 2022. The data were presented by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA).

According to the institution, in 2022 there were 86 reports, in 2023 – 152 reports (+77% compared to 2022), in 2024 – 373 reports (+145% compared to 2023), in 2025 – 494 reports (+32% compared to 2024), and in February 2026 there were 137 reports registered.

Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin stated that MIA employees voluntarily report attempts at bribery, which demonstrates internal responsibility and self-regulation.

“At present, the figures show that our police officers choose integrity and professionalism. The data confirm that the phenomenon of corruption in the National Police remains minor and that integrity is a conscious choice for the majority of officers. I am convinced that this decline in corruption reflects not only the professionalism of the police, but also the positive impact of the use of body cameras, which bring transparency and accountability to every mission. The MIA maintains zero tolerance toward any violation of the law. In addition, the integrity policy, implemented through the Internal Protection and Anti-Corruption Service, plays an active and strategic role: it informs, raises awareness and continuously trains employees, strengthening a culture of integrity, honesty and professionalism. Thus, the evolution of internal reports clearly shows the positive impact of this policy,” stated Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

In the period 2022–2025, over 240 criminal cases were initiated for passive corruption offenses committed by employees. Every notification is examined and sanctioned in accordance with the law.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs draws attention to the fact that offering or promising money, goods, services or other advantages to an MIA employee in order to avoid a sanction or obtain favorable treatment constitutes the crime of active corruption, which is punishable under criminal law. The consequences include fines and a criminal record.
