Coordinated control at Moldovan-Romanian border to be extended at three crossing points

Coordinated control at the Moldovan-Romanian border is operational at two crossing points: Leuseni-Albita and Giurgiulesti-Galati. In the near future, it will also be extended to Cantemir-Falciu, Sculeni and Lipcani-Radauti Prut. Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin has made statements to this effect in an interview given with MOLDPRES.

The official emphasized that, for the government, the mobility of citizens and freight transport were clear priorities, established in the National Plan for Accession to the European Union.

“Wherever there is mobility, there is also business and this directly contributes to improving the quality of life of citizens, which is what we want for our country. To accelerate the safe and efficient movement of people and goods, we are in the process of expanding and strengthening coordinated control with the border authorities of Romania and joint control with Ukraine. Thus, at the Moldovan-Romanian border, coordinated control is already operational at two points: Leuseni-Albita and Giurgiulesti-Galati, and in the near future it will be extended to Cantemir-Falciu, Sculeni and Lipcani-Radauti Prut. At the Moldovan-Ukrainian border, joint control is legally regulated at nine crossing points, of which seven are operational. Two points remain suspended due to the war in Ukraine. The extension of control to other Moldovan-Ukrainian border points is not planned at the moment,” said Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

In addition to expanding coordinated and joint controls, the authorities are implementing more measures to streamline cross-border traffic.

“It is about the digitalization of control procedures, increasing the number of first-line staff, opening additional lanes where infrastructure allows, applying the Reverse procedure when necessary, and maintaining permanent cooperation with the Customs Service and neighboring border authorities. In terms of infrastructure, the Border Police are implementing the Government’s Growth Plan by procuring special equipment, including IT solutions for biometric controls and surveillance, as well as for the modernization of existing crossing points and the construction of new border posts. Thus, for 2026, the completion of the construction of the Otaci Border Police Sector and the start of the North Regional Department headquarters are planned. Together with Romania, by 2030 we have scheduled the construction of four new bridges over the Prut River. In the future, we also aim for each district to have at least one bridge over the Prut, built in partnership with counties and regions in Romania,” underlined Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

All these measures aim to ensure faster, safer and more predictable cross-border traffic, while protecting citizens’ security and facilitating trade and the mobility of people between countries.
